Alfresco is the most active Open Source ECM solution on the market. Thus, if you need an ECM system, it is hard not to mention this product. The software development team came from other ECM companies to form the right product. Alfresco is in a constant active development process, and we can regularly see new attractive features. A key advantage of this document management system is its easy integration into your work system. The idea is that users can just start using the product almost without changing their habits. At the same time, as an advanced user/administrator, you will have a very rich set of (advanced) features to improve your productivity including basic workflow support. The other strong side of Alfresco is its educational process with documentation, webinars, and step-by-step instructions.

Nevertheless, I believe it is still hard to implement an effective document management system without the knowledge and understanding of the underlaying business processes and implementation of a BPM over it. In itself Alfresco has an already embeded jBPM to implement its internal "complex" workflow system (not the simple one).  Because a user would still like to have a more end-user-friendly BMPS, I'd recommend to apply a BPM system of your choice over Alfresco.
