Business Process Management

Activiti

Activiti is a new Open Source BPM system from Alfresco made by jBPM developers. I did not test it personally, but screenshots look pretty neat. The modeler interface seems to be very intuitive. The reputation of leading Open Source Document Management system and a team of jBPM developers makes us think that the BPMN 2.0 product is really good.

How do I know if my company is need of BPM?

in

Previously, this question was not even on the agenda for small or medium business. The cost of typical BPM solution was far bigger than a business could afford. Now it's completely different. The Open Source solutions like Intalio and Bonita allow small/medium businesses to use these technologies not for free (nothing is this world is free, even Free Open Source Software), but for very affordable price of business analytic's services without license fees.

Besides the cost business has a problem with understanding of BPM, which sometimes referenced as workflow. Of course, BPM is a serious term which includes many things like ideology and complicated technologies, but do actually business need to know all that staff to have advantage of using BPM? I think no.

Orchestra

Orchestra is another BPEL-based BPMS. It looks like a Bonita's less successive sister. This is the kind of product you have to make an effort to give a try.

jBPM

jBPM from JBoss by RedHat is a powerful BPMN 2.0 Open Source BMP system. It is good for Java/JBoss programmers. I'm not sure if it is good for end users by itself. Though, end users will probably meet jBPM within other OSS like Alfresco.

uEngine

This is another attractive looking Open Source BPMS Package. It comes from Korea. The product looks like it's easily embeddable and provides possibility of zero code development as well. Some distributions come with Liferay, Mondrian and Drools. This sounds just great and looks very promising like a highly ready-to-use solution. Documentation makes you think that it supports every standard and technology possible.

Process Maker

This is a true Open Source LAMP-based very ease-to-start BPM package. Being targeted for small and medium business, the ProcessMaker is intuitive, simple and does not require many computer resources. It has several usefull connectors to other enterprise management software products such as OpenBravo and KnowledgeTree. The site has extensive documentation and YouTube video tutorials. But if you, for some reason, need to follow BPM standards such as BPMN, BPEL, xPDL, this is not your choice.

Bonita

"An intuitive and powerful solution to build process based applications for optimum cost." This is a truly neat BPMS with AJAX interface, XPDL-based (which is BPEL alternative). Being an already ready-to-use product, it is currently in a very active development phase. It does not include BAM or BRE at the moment, but has a lot of connectors to other software.

Intalio BPMS

This is an Open Source BPMS with almost all bells and whistles available. Intalio pretends to be a leader among the Open Source BPMS. The Community version is limited to a Designer and a BPEL server (no BAM, BRE). Intalio provides a true zero-code interface, but still requires advanced skills to use it effectively. Most problems can be solved, but to solve them fast you have to either buy commercial version or find Intalio GURU. Just ask. :)
